There are many different ways in which you can injure the foot, depending on the mechanism of injury (what actually happened) and other factors.
The most common injuries are of the metatarsal bones, specifically the 5th metatarsal. Any other bone can be fractured, for example the phalanges (broken toe), calcaneum (heel bone), talus, cuboid or navicular. Sprains or dislocations of the mid-foot are also potentially serious injuries, and called “LisFranc” injuries.
Some of these fractures can safely be treated with support bandage, some with immobilisation in a boot or cast, but some require prompt surgery and fixation.
If you think you have broken a bone in your foot, you should contact the clinic immediately, or your local A&E department, as you may well require an x-ray and treatment. With more severe fractures, the necessary course of action is usually obvious. |
